Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President, Tax, the Director, Income Tax, is accountable for successfully leading the Company’s US GAAP tax provision process as well as managing all aspects of the Company’s US and Canadian income tax compliance, audits, research and planning.   The successful candidate will possess both the technical tax skills to work at a detailed level and the confidence to effectively communicate complex tax and financial topics to non-financial people at all levels. Assist the Vice-President, Tax with other projects as needed.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Diligent preparation of quarterly and annual consolidated worldwide income tax provision workpapers under US GAAP in accordance with ASC 740. Ensure all income tax related general ledger accounts are properly recorded and reconciled.
  • Accurate and timely filing of corporate income tax returns for all tax jurisdictions within the US and Canada. This includes in-house preparation of all book-tax differences, quarterly estimate filings, and annual extension and tax return filings.
  • Partner with external consultants on various income tax technical matters including the forecasting and accurate and timely calculation of quarterly and annual financial and income tax LIFO adjustments.
  • Oversee all aspects of income tax audits by US and Canadian federal, state/provincial and local tax authorities including document production and issue resolution.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with changing tax laws and provide input on changes that could affect the Company’s tax posture. Manage and execute on tax strategies to minimize cash taxes and lower the effective tax rate.
  • Maintain a cradle to grave approach to corporate transactions that encompass all aspects of a deal including; negotiation, due diligence, structure, document review, financing, closing, post-closing reorganization and business integration.
  • Compliance with all aspects of internal and external SOX audits including documentation, implementation of effective internal controls, developing self-testing procedures and instituting remedial solutions.
  • Prepare the quarterly and annual US stock compensation tax analysis and oversee the in-house preparation and review of the annual Canadian transfer pricing workpapers.
  • Develop, train and mentor an engaged, talented and effective tax team.

Skills & Experiences:

  • Bachelor’s degree – preferably in Accounting, Business Administration or Finance
  • Minimum 10 to 15 years in public accounting and/or multinational corporate tax department; Big 4 accounting firm experience a plus, US CPA required
  • Thorough understanding of ASC 740 and US GAAP
  • Solid understanding of US and Canadian corporate income tax compliance
  • Excellent communication, listening and presentation skills working cross-functionally across all levels of the organization
  • Strong tax technical skills in researching corporate income tax laws and regulations
  • Ability to identify and articulate tax planning and compliance issues, opportunities and recommendations while proactively identifying and mitigating tax risks
  • A motivated, resourceful, self-starter who can work independently with minimal direction and thrive in a distributed team environment
  • Strong project management skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively manage and implement multiple complex projects within established deadlines
  • Demonstrated experience managing financial statement and tax authority audits
  • Action oriented perspective to take on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm
  • Resourceful in securing and deploying talent and technology effectively and efficiently
  • Skilled in managing relationships with outside tax advisors, financial statement auditors and consultants on an ongoing basis
  • Knowledge of indirect tax helpful
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Experience with SAP, Corptax and BNA Fixed Asset software a plus
  • Ability to travel within the US and Canada (approx. 10%)
