Committed to Serving

At Core-Mark, we believe in the power of one, strengthened by all. That’s why we are especially honored to have employees who have given so much individually for the greater good of their country. Please join us in honoring three of our employees who have joined us from the U.S. Armed Forces.

Meet Keith – Transportation Training Manager

Known as a “Mustang” in the Marine Corps because he served in both the enlisted and commissioned ranks, Keith rose to the rank of Sergeant before being selected for a Commissioning Program. After serving for 11 years as an Active Duty Marine and 11 years in the Marine Corps Reserve, he retired with the rank of Major so that he could spend more time with his family. His career at Core-Mark allows him to do just that.

“I think on some level, most people honor veterans, but I do believe Core-Mark has tried a little harder to see military members for their shared values and honor them accordingly. They display a real sense of patriotism and I know I appreciate that, because it really matters to me.”

One of the most difficult aspects of Keith’s transition back to civilian life was that, in his experience, few people in the civilian world were aware of the actual skills, training, hands-on experience, and expertise veterans come out of the military with. “Essentially, you have to start from square one, even though your resume can be well developed already.”

But the benefits of being in the Marine Corps were too numerous to count — something that Keith felt Core-Mark recognized when he joined. “I think on some level, most people honor veterans, but I do believe Core-Mark has tried a little harder to see military members for their shared values and honor them accordingly. They display a real sense of patriotism, and I know I appreciate that because it really matters to me.”

When making the transition, Keith also found it helpful to connect with other veterans who understood his experiences, his way of thinking and how to translate that to success in his new job.

“Beyond that, it helps to realize that we went into the military for the safety of our families, and the freedom of our great country. Where we do it doesn’t matter as much as that we do it. And that makes veterans an important asset to an organization.”

Meet Jonathan – Core-Mark Operations Manager

Jonathan joined the forces when he was 18, and looking back, he credits the Army with shaping him into the leader he is today. Now that he’s transitioned back to civilian life, he’s found that the skills he honed during his service ¬—learning precise communication, individual accountability and impeccable execution — help him excel at work today.

In his experience, the Army and Core-Mark share a common philosophy, which is the importance of family. “The Army has and will always be my family, but I have found a new one within Core-Mark. The way the value of family is lived in the culture of Core-Mark makes for one of the best places to call home.”

He likens Core-Mark’s “The Power of One, Strengthened by All,” to the mottos he lived by during his time in the Army: “An Army of One” and “Army Strong.”

“We are a family and are only as strong as one when we work together,” he says.

Jonathan’s advice for veterans looking to transition? Take pride in who you are and your experiences.

“Lead your teammates, department, and division in the same ways you did while serving. Step up to the challenges and show your commitment and dedication.”

Meet Dennis – Operations Training Manager

Dennis began his military career in the Marine Corps in February 1990. He spent three years overseas and was awarded the Naval Achievement Medal for his technical and logistical proficiencies while serving in Thailand. Throughout his military career, Dennis was given the opportunity to learn everything he could about logistics — from storage and warehousing to transportation and delivery — which he carried over into his career at Core-Mark.

“Core-Mark is a team that has a family atmosphere which all branches of the military can relate to. An individual with a military background has the discipline and tenacity to grow and achieve great things with Core-Mark.”

Dennis enjoys his role as a leader at Core-Mark. Coming from the famously efficient Marine Corps, he enjoys teaching his colleagues how to “work smarter, not harder.”
